LOS ANGELES — The parents of two University of Southern California (USC) graduate students shot to death near campus last month have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the university.
Ming Qu and Ying Wu, both electronic engineering students from China, were shot while sitting in Qu’s BMW in a neighborhood by campus on April 11, the Los Angeles Times reports. Wanzhi Qu and Xiahong Fei, Qu’s parents, and Xuyong Wu and Meinan Yin, Wu’s parents, claim in their lawsuit that USC does not provide 24-hour law enforcement services as stated on its Web site.
The suit alleges the university “actively solicits international students particularly from China for its graduate studies program for which it receives a substantial sum of money from tuition to help fund the university” and that, after the shooting, it persisted with its “clearly misleading” portrayal of safety.
In a statement, USC attorney Debra Wong Yang called the suit “baseless.”
Police arrested two suspects in the murders, the Associate Press reports. Neither Javier Bolden, 19, or Bryan Barnes, 20, has a long criminal history, but police believe they have a gang affiliation.
