Children at very young ages now either own or have access to cell phones, social media sites and other technologies that may make them more vulnerable to cyber bullying and the advances of sexual predators. There are, however, ways that parents and school personnel can effectively address student online safety issues.
Clay Cranford, who is deputy sheriff for the Orange County (Calif.) Sheriff’s Department is an expert on cyber security for children, and he presented on this topic at Campus Safety Conference West 2016.
In this exclusive interview with Campus Safety magazine, Cranford answers the following questions:
- When should parents and school staff start talking to kids about the safe use of technology?
- If a child makes a bad decision by engaging in cyber bullying, sexting or some other cyber offense or is a victim, how should parents and school administrators address the issue?
- How should school administrators work with parents so students stay safe online? Does zero tolerance work?
