OSU Students Protest Food Operator’s Human Rights Violations

Published: May 23, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nine people, including seven Ohio State University (OSU) students, were arrested on May 23 after they refused to disband a protest at the president’s office. The protest was aimed at a $10 million deal between the university and the French-food operator Sodexo, which has allegedly been involved in human rights violations.

About 50 students and community members participated in the sit-in, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Of those arrested, all were charged with criminal trespassing and one — a Georgia State University student — was charged with resisting arrest.

Five independent sources — including Human Rights Watch — have reported that Sodexo violated the rights of its employees in the United States as well as other countries. Sodexo workers at OSU have complained of sexual harassment, poor wages, racism and an inadequate sick-leave policy.

A meeting between the university and the student group to discuss OSU’s 15-year relationship with Sodexo is scheduled for next week.
