SHELBY, N.C. — On June 7, the North Carolina House supported a bill that would make it legal for parents and teachers with concealed handgun permits to bring their firearms onto school grounds.
The guns would have to be in a closed compartment or container within a locked car, The Star reports. Rep. Kelly Hastings said school safety would not be affected if adults with valid permits have guns secured in their vehicles when picking up or dropping off children.
Another provision of House Bill 650 reduces the penalty for having a firearm on school property without a concealed-carry permit from a felony to a misdemeanor. Hastings said this was intended to prevent hunters who leave shotguns and rifles in their vehicles from becoming convicted felons.
