UPDATE: The suspected gunman purchased a high-powered rifle hours after failing an oral exam at the University of Colorado, reports ABC News. He withdrew from school three days later.
AURORA, Colo.— The suspect in Friday’s Batman movie theater massacre was pursuing his PhD in neuroscience at the University of Colorado this past semester. James Holmes, 24, withdrew from school in June, reports ABC News.
Police evacuated two research buildings on the campus, reports the Huffington Post. The move is a precaution, and the school’s police chief says students and staff are not at risk. The evacuation order is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday.
Homes has been arrested for killing at least 12 people and injuring as many as 59 during the midnight premier of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Authorities are currently searching his apartment, which is just a few blocks from the hospital. It could take days for the search to conclude because Holmes’ residence is reportedly full of explosives and chemicals.
