MONTREAL — Police have launched investigations into 19 people at Universite de Montreal for disrupting the reopening of the university Monday. The protestors allegedly violated provisions of Bill 78, a controversial back-to-school law.
Quebec passed Bill 78 in May to suspend the semester at colleges and universities where students were protesting during the spring, The Canadian Press reports. When the colleges reopened, the legislation required demonstrators to show police their itinerary eight hours in advance, and it set out stiff penalties for protesters who block schools. Critics said the legislation infringes on the right to protest.
On Monday, demonstrators entered classrooms, pulled fire alarms and ordered students to leave. Several teachers canceled courses and in at least one case, a class was suspended when the students didn’t show up.
