The Montana House of Representatives rejected a bill that would’ve allowed people with concealed carry permits to bring guns on college campuses.
On March 31 the House voted 51-49 to defeat the bill, which had already passed the Senate. Opponents of the bill said they received little support for it and ultimately the potential consequences outweighed the benefits, according to the Great Falls Tribune.
A 1990 school shooting shaped the current school gun laws in Montana, where students can check in weapons to be put in storage then must check them out. Representative Jeffrey Welborn of Dillon said he opposed the bill because he received a letter from a father whose son was shot to death on the campus of Montana Tech in 1982.
Representative Seth Berglee, who carried the bill through the Senate, said people with concealed carry permits are responsible and have a right to defend themselves anywhere.
