Adams had been transported to Bayfront Health following an accident that police planned to charge him for. In that incident, Adams’ car flipped after police believe he failed to yield at an intersection and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

Police found a “large volume” of hydrocodone with Adams after the crash, although they did not suspect drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.

Adams was being treated for non-incapacitating injuries at the hospital when a nurse discovered his body. Doctors initially attempted to revive Adams, but he was pronounced dead at 6:15 Tuesday.

Bayfront Health’s policies do not allow staff to discuss security measures, and it was not immediately known how Adams got a gun inside the hospital. A hospital spokesperson did say that they have conducted drills to prepare for emergency scenarios and worked with local law enforcement in the past.
