Raleigh, North Carolina – A male juvenile was arrested Thursday night after he brought an AR-15 to a basketball game being played at Millbrook High School.
According to authorities, police officers responded on Thursday at 8:40 p.m. to reports that a subject had a gun at the basketball game against Hillside High School. The boy was found with an AR-15 and immediately taken into custody by the Raleigh Police Department with assistance from the Wake county Sheriff’s Office and Wake County Public Schools’ Security, reports ABC11.
Police say the suspect is not a student, reports WECT. His age and identity have not been released by authorities.
In response to the incident, extra law enforcement personnel will be patrolling Millbrook’s campus on Friday. Counselors will also be available to support students.
In a message to parents and staff on Thursday evening, Millbrook Principal Dr. Brian Saunders urged students to openly discuss concerning situations with adults.
“The best means to keep schools safe is to maintain healthy and open relationships between adults and children at all times,” Saunders said. “Please help us to continue to emphasize to students that they should feel comfortable in talking about situations that cause them concern.”
WRAL reports that at least 10 guns have been seized at schools in the area in the last month, including Millbrook.
