The Justice Department has brokered a settlement between a gay student who was bullied for being effeminate and a New York school district.
The department interpreted the Title IX statute, which prohibits discrimination against students on the basis of gender, to also apply to gender expression, according to NPR.
As a result, the unidentified male student will receive $50,000 from the district. He will also be reimbursed for his legal fees and counseling costs. Additionally, the district will provide anti-harassment training to its staff and teachers.
According to NPR, school officials knew about the bullying but did nothing to stop it. The boy was also bullied by a teacher.
