DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines School District will pay $369,760 to install 182 new surveillance cameras district-wide in an effort to increase security.
The district, which serves more than 32,000 students in more than 60 schools, already has more than 500 cameras in place, DesMoinesRegister.com reports. Officials intend to use the cameras provide local police with information and evidence related to on-campus incident, as well as provide a crime deterrent to bad behavior.
Half of the funds to install the cameras come from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) office. District officials expect to have 648 cameras installed by 2014.
