SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A bill has been introduced in Illinois that would require school buses to meet fire code standards. If buses do not meet these standards, they cannot be sold in the state.
House Bill 2842 would prohibit buses from being used unless the seating in the bus has been tested to determine flammability, Quad-Cities Online reports. Also, any plastic engine parts must meet specific industry standards.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Pat Verschoore (D-Milan) who also supports House Bill 147, which allows the employer of a school bus driver to administer a drug or alcohol test if they think the driver is intoxicated. Drivers who test positive will have their permits suspended by the Secretary of State.
