ILLINOIS — School districts across the state have failed to disclose thousands of drug, weapon and teacher assault incidents to state authorities as required by a long-standing Illinois law.
The statewide reporting system suffers from little oversight and no enforcement, the Chicago Tribune reports. Districts often report crimes to local police, but not the state — meaning that parents, residents and law enforcement cannot access accurate school crime data.
Some of the largest districts, like Stevenson in Lake County, Hinsdale in DuPage, Maine 207 in Cook and Lincoln-Way 210 in Will, have not reported any crime to the state in six years. Local police, however, have responded to more than 100 drug cases and other serious incidents that should have been reported.
