Houston Teacher Charged in Videotaped School Beating

HOUSTON—The Houston teacher who was videotaped beating a 13-year-old student has been charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony.

Sheri Davis, 40, could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine if convicted of the April 29 incident, when she allegedly kicked, shoved and dragged a Jamie’s House Charter School student Isaiah Reagins, according to MSNBC. Davis was fired the week after the incident occurred.

Additionally, three other school employees were charged with failure to report child abuse, which is a misdemeanor. The defendants, including superintendent and founder Ollie Hilliard, principal David Jones and teacher Gabriel Moseley – who was present during the attack – could face up to one year in jail and up to a $4,000 fine if convicted.

Davis has since apologized for the beating, saying that she was “without excuse” for the attack.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has assigned a conservator to review safety, discipline and teacher training at the school.
