High School Security Officer Dies After Breaking Up Student Brawl

CHICAGO — A Thornwood High School security guard died Thursday after trying to break up a fight between two female students.

Richard Cowser, 54, collapsed against a lock as he tried to restrain on of the girls. School officials called the paramedics after Cowser appeared to be struggling to breathe. He died 30 minutes after arriving at a nearby hospital, NBC Chicago reports.

Results from an autopsy, taken Friday, were deemed inconclusive. Authorities believed the autopsy results could help determine whether to file charges in the case.

Police are also examining surveillance footage as part of the investigation.
