Gunman Fatally Shoots Student at Fla. University Apartment Complex

One suspect has been arrested in the shooting that occured at Florida Atlantic University’s student housing facility. The incident appears to be drug related.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) student Nick Acosta, 19, has been identified as the student who was shot to death on Tuesday at the University Park Apartments.

Police have arrested Donovan Malik Henry, 19, who they say entered the complex around 7:20 p.m., along with another suspect. The Palm Beach Post is reporting, however, that Henry was not the shooter.  Acosta was shot in the torso by one of the three other suspects who barged in after Acosta’s girlfriend let Henry in. When officers arrived, the victim was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, reports WPBF.

Acosta’s girlfriend told police the gunman, who was wearing a mask, ordered the couple to the ground and then shot Acosta, reports the Washington Times.  She recognized Henry because she had met him at a party two months earlier.

After the incident, a bag of marijuana was missing. Acosta had sold drugs from the apartment in the past, reports the Palm Beach Post.

The student housing facility was locked down for nearly four hours, and residents were ordered to shelter in place while SWAT officers cleared the complex.

Security officers patrol the complex 24 hours per day, and a key fob or access code is required for entry to the parking lot. That said, there is no guarded gatehouse screening cars as they enter the parking lot, reports WPTV. The TV station is also reporting that parents were promised a gatehouse, which one parent believes might have prevented the shooting.
