FSU Student Sentenced to 20 Years in Accidental Shooting

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Florida State University student was sentenced to 20 years for accidentally shooting and killing a friend at a fraternity house.

Evan Wilhelm told police he was showing off a new light on his semi-automatic rifle when it accidentally discharged, killing Ashley Cowie, WCTV.tv reports. Keith Savino was struck in the arm by the same bullet.

Cowie’s twin sister, Amy — who was in the room at the time of the shooting — asked the judge for the maximum sentence. Savino asked that the judge to sentence Wilhelm to 20 years — one for each year of Ashley’s life.
