Two university officials warned of the dangers of “dabbing” marijuana in a journal letter June 15.
John Stogner of the University of North Carolina and Bryan Lee Miller of Georgia Southern University published their warnings on making and smoking hash oil in the journal Pediatrics. Hash oil is a concentrated form of THC created by running butane through a marijuana plant to filter out the chemical that creates the high.
Stogner and Miller say the process of making hash oil and inhaling it can create explosions and cause serious burns, although there have been no deaths reported as a result of producing hash oil.
They explain that hash oil production is growing in popularity because the process is uncomplicated and there are countless instructional videos online, according to nbcnews.com.
Recreational marijuana is legal in Colorado, Alaska, Washington and Oregon, although state governments often have ambivalent policies toward hash oil.
