CARSON CITY, Nev. — Police arrested an 88-year-old man at Carson Tahoe Medical Center on Sunday after he opened fire and shot his wife in the chest.
The suspect, William Dresser, arrived at the hospital around 11:20 a.m. and continued to the third floor. He then shot his wife of 63 years once in the chest before corrections officers subdued him, USA Today reports.
Dresser told authorities that his wife was in an accident two weeks prior to the incident that left her paralyzed. The man told police that his wife expressed to him that she did not want to live anymore, so he arrived at the hospital with a .22-cailber handgun loaded with two bullets — two for his wife and two for him. Authorities said the gun jammed after the first shot.
Carson Tahoe was placed on lockdown for two hours following the shooting, and reopened at 1:45 p.m.
The victim was taken was transferred to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with life-threatening injuries. Her name an age were not immediately released.
Dresser has been charged with attempted murder with a deadly weapon, with an elderly enhancement. He is currently on suicide watch.
