District to Challenge Ruling on ‘I Heart Boobies’ Bracelets
EASTON, Pa. — A federal judge ruled in favor of students who were told by Easton Area School District officials they could not wear breast cancer fundraising bracelets on school grounds. A temporary injunction has been filed to prevent the district from enforcing its ban on “I heart boobies!” bracelets; the district intends to appeal the ruling.
The lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of two middle school students who were suspended for wearing the bracelets on their school’s Breast Cancer Awareness Day, KPSP Local 2 News Services reports. The district claimed the bracelets were a distraction because of their sexual double meaning.
District Judge Mary McLaughlin ruled on Tuesday that the jewelry was not lewd or distracting, the Associated Press reports. On Wednesday, the district voted unanimously to appeal the decision.
