POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Poughkeepsie school board voted Dec. 14 to approve funding to put police back in city schools. In the same week, a teacher at Poughkeepsie High School stabbed a fellow teacher 16 times with a Phillips screwdriver.
An off-duty patrol officer, who was working security for the school, took English teacher Ronette Ricketts into custody and called 911, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports. Ricketts faces charges of first-degree attempted assault and second-degree assault, as well as fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon for attacking Cynthia Glozier in a hallway.
Poughkeepsie City Schools Superintendent Laval Wilson said that the approval of the funding was not related to the incident, but the city’s schools have seen an increase in shootings and other weapons incidents.
