WILMINGTON, Del. — Gov. Jack Markell is signing a bill into law Monday that will create a statewide framework for comprehensive school safety plans.
The Omnibus School Safety Act requires the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security to work with schools, districts and first responders to develop comprehensive school safety plans for each public school and district, the Associated Press reports. The plans will be coordinated with first responders and comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Currently, schools are required to adopt emergency preparedness plans, but those plans do not have to be school-specific or coordinated with first responders.
