Detroit schools are safer than they were in 2013, according to data compiled by the Detroit Public Schools Police Department.
Crime-related incidents were down 24.7% on school campuses as compared to the first three months of school in 2013. Reported incidents dropped from 456 to 343, the Detroit News reports.
School officials also reported that incidents of weapons possession dropped from four to three, assaults dropped from 60 to 40 incidents, breaking and entering for open structures dropped from 75 to 13 incidents and sexual assaults declined from 12 incidents in 2013 to eight incidents in 2014.
Officials made the announcement during a ceremony celebrating its citizen patrol volunteers who keep students safe traveling to and from school as part of the Safe Routes to School program.
