RALEIGH, N.C. — A former Rutgers University student accused of secretly filming his roommate during a sexual encounter and streaming it live on the Internet may have destroyed evidence and posted false tweets to his Twitter account to throw off investigators, according to an indictment released today.
Dharun Ravi was indicted on 15 counts including charges of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation and tampering with evidence, ABC News reports. According to prosecutors, Ravi filmed his roommate, Tyler Clementi, in an attempt to intimidate him because of his sexual orientation. Days later, Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River.
Prosecutors allege that Ravi tried to get rid of posts to his Twitter feed and convince other students not to testify against him.
Evidence against Ravi’s alleged accomplice, former Rutgers’s student Molly Wei, has not yet been presented to a grand jury.
