Campus Security Monitor Charged with Bringing Gun to Florida School

Only law enforcement and school guardians who are trained by the Broward Sheriff’s Office are permitted to carry a gun on campus.

North Lauderdale, Florida – A campus security monitor who works at Silver Lakes Middle School has been arrested and charged with bringing her loaded gun to work.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer Melo, 33, left the firearm in a backpack on the front passenger seat of her vehicle, reports the Sun Sentinel.

Only sworn law enforcement officers and school guardians who are trained by the Broward Sheriff’s Office are permitted to carry a gun on campus. Someone reported that Melo had the gun in her vehicle.

She’s been reassigned until her case can be reviewed. Melo was charged on January 13 with a third-degree felony – possession of a firearm on school property.
