CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Discounted pricing for the third and final in-person Campus Safety Conference of 2023, which is co-located with EDspaces, ends on Oct. 20. CSC at EDspaces is happening Nov. 7-9 at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Now in its second year, this co-located event still offers the content Campus Safety Conference attendees have come to expect and love but also gives free access to EDspaces sessions, providing new insights into architects and distributors in the education design market. Some EDspaces sessions also dive into ways to improve physical safety and student wellness through classroom design, making this partnership a natural progression for the two events as mental health and campus physical safety go hand-in-hand with classroom design to create spaces where students and teachers thrive.

The CSC features keynotes, general sessions, panel discussions, hot topics, and workshops, in addition to dozens of vendors. A conference registration pass also gives attendees access to over 200 EDspaces vendors and dozens of EDspaces educational sessions.

Since posting our last article outlining several CSC sessions as well as EDspaces sessions that would benefit campus security professionals, additional sessions have been added to the CSC lineup! Here’s a sneak peek:
- The Role of School Governance in Safety: School Board Trustees form an integral part of the school leadership team. Among their many roles and responsibilities, is to provide for the development, approval, deployment, funding, and implementation of a school’s comprehensive Safety and Security plan. This session will focus on both the “nuts and bolts” processes required as well as how to avoid being pulled too deeply into the weeds of this complex topic.
- 3 Keys to Effective School Security: An effective school security program depends on more than just state-mandated documents. How can you make sure your school is effectively addressing areas of vulnerability? This presentation will provide you with the tools you need to proactively and holistically approach school safety and security. Special focus will be placed on Collaboration, Awareness and Student Involvement. From train-the-trainer style quizzes to photographic vulnerability identification, attendees will benefit from an interactive environment. Attendees will learn how to address today’s security issues, implement site-specific strategies, and access helpful resources.

Join this discussion and learn more about how you can leverage the newest version of Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) Safety and Security Guidelines for K-12 Schools, the most comprehensive information available on practices specifically for securing school facilities, which has been recognized by the Federal Commission on School Safety, School Safety.gov and other task forces and commissions on school security.
- Risk Assessments—The First Step in Evaluating Facility Safety: In this interactive discussion, we’ll emphasize the critical role of professional risk assessments in ensuring the safety of school campuses. We’ll explore how schools can effectively evaluate their physical security needs through these assessments, enabling them to proactively address potential vulnerabilities and create a safer environment for students and staff.
- What is Handle with Care? Establishing this Innovative Program on Your Campus?: If law enforcement responds to a call at home or a situation where children are present, will the school know about it? Not always. The Handle With Care program is designed to allow law enforcement to collaborate with schools and educational providers to minimize the adverse effects of the trauma of the event. This presentation will outline the program, how it functions, how it was set up, possible problems, and potential next steps. Attendees will leave with actionable items to establish this program in their school or educational setting. Allowing law enforcement and schools to work together to ease a student’s trauma is a logical progression, and Handle With Care is the process to do just that.
- School Risk Management – A Forward Thinking Model on Campus Safety “A to Z:” School Safety involves much more than what the media and communities focus on. The potential risks that students and staff face every day run from ‘A to Z,’ although the overwhelming focus nationally is on the ‘A’ — Active Shooter. Yes, the ‘A’ is a serious concern and needs to be addressed. However, from an overall risk management perspective, we must also prepare for risks that statistically are present daily and more likely to occur. Protecting students, staff, visitors, and facility property and reducing overall general liability must focus beyond the ‘A.’
- More Than 20 Years After Columbine: Prevention and Early Intervention to Protect and to Educate: In this workshop, Susan Payne, founder of Safe2Tell and the first Special Agent and Executive Director of School Safety for the Colorado Department of Public Safety following the Columbine tragedy, will share her unique perspective on the history of responding to school shootings. She will discuss research, case studies, lessons learned, and opportunities to focus on prevention, protection, and early intervention. Susan charts a roadmap for school safety improvement based on lessons learned, leading practices in the field, and what is currently working to create safer schools, safer students, and a safer learning environment.
