PLACERVILLE, Calif. — An elementary school principal who was shot in his office Feb. 2 died of his injuries at a local hospital. The alleged shooter, a janitor at Louisiana Schnell Elementary School, has been apprehended by police.
Sam LaCara, 50, was shot once in the torso. He was transported to Marshall Medical Center, where he died at 11 a.m., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The school was immediately locked down following the shooting.
The school’s janitor, John Luebbers, 44, was arrested at his home an hour after a police manhunt was launched. Luebbers thought he had been fired from his job at the school the morning of the incident, the Los Angeles Times reports. However, according to the district superintendent, LaCara had only sent him home due to a dispute regarding the principal’s appointment of a nighttime custodian.
Luebbers returned to campus and fired two rounds in LaCara’s office, mortally wounding the principal. Luebbers is being held without bail.
No students were harmed during the incident. One student may have witnessed the shooting.
