SACRAMENTO — Assemblymember Tony Mendoza’s education legislation AB 85 and AB 86 both passed the Assembly Committee on Education this week.
AB 85 requires public schools and community college modernization projects and new construction to include classroom locks that can be locked from the inside as a protective measure.
AB 86, the classified employees/charter schools bill, gives classified employees a voice in creating a new charter school or converting an existing public school. If signed into law the bill would provide classified employees the same rights as those afforded to teachers, by allowing classified employees to participate in the petition signature process in the same manner as teachers when establishing new charter schools or converting existing schools into charter schools.
“I couldn’t be happier to see these bills moving forward,” Assemblymember Mendoza said. “Our children’s safety and access to affordable, quality education is my number one priority as a legislator. Today we are one step closer to achieving that goal.”
Assemblymember Tony Mendoza, a former teacher and current Chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, has served in the State Assembly since 2006.
