A high school cafeteria in Marysville, Wash., was the site of a school shooting in October, and after months of being out of commission school district leaders are making plans to close it for good.
The Marysville Pilchuck High School’s main cafeteria will not reopen after its school board set aside money to help with the design of a new cafeteria to be put somewhere else on the school’s campus, according to heraldnet.com.
For many the cafeteria is a reminder of the tragedy that occurred within its doors in the fall. In October a freshman walked up to a table of his friends having lunch and started shooting. He shot five students, killing four of them, before taking his own life.
Now the school board is designating $150,000 to help with the initial design of the cafeteria while hoping the state pays for the construction. The decision came after a forum in December and a recent online survey that found 67% of respondents favor tearing down the cafeteria. Some respondents favor building an entirely new high school. Marysville Pilchuck has 77 exterior doors, which raised concern for some residents about the school’s safety and security.
