BOSTON — Members of the Boston College Students for Sexual Health, a group that the university does not recognize, face disciplinary action from college officials for passing out contraceptives on campus.
Since 2009, members of the student group have distributed condoms and sexual health information from their dorm rooms, known as “Safe Sites.” However, on March 15, university officials sent an E-mail warning to the organization stating that dispensing contraceptives on campus violates the Catholic institution’s values and traditions, NBCNews.com reports.
The incident has garnered attention from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Massachusetts, which says the warning violates the Massachusetts Civil Rights Act. However, school officials maintain that as a private, religious institution, it has the right to enforce and set its own rules.
Additionally, administrators say that the group started becoming more visible and disruptive on campus by handing out contraceptives on sidewalks and in front of churches. It is unclear what type of punishment the students would receive for the incident.
