Boise State Athletics announced a clear bag policy will go into effect at Albertsons Stadium following the end of the 2019 football season.
Although the policy won’t be implemented until 2020, signs were posted in the stadium last month to prepare attendees for the future changes, Idaho News reports.
Clear plastic or vinyl bags and containers that don’t exceed 12 x 6 x 12 inches and one-gallon plastic bags and small bags and purses that don’t exceed 4.5 x 6.5 inches will be permitted.
“Prohibited bags include but are not limited to large purses, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, luggage of any kind, computer bags or any bag larger than the permissible size,” BSA said. “The policy is not intended to interfere with guests attending with specific medical needs or guests caring for young children.”
Boise State had considered implementing a clear bag policy back in 2013 when other stadium security procedures were put into place, such as the use of magnetometers, according to The Arbiter.
“The magnetometers were, in part, a response to the legislation in 2013 that made it an actual law violation to enter the stadium with a weapon,” said Texie Montoya, an advisor and attorney for the Department of Public Safety at Boise State. “Several years ago they were planning to do clear bags, or that was a discussion when the magnetometers were put in place but they kind of changed course on that.”
While there are several other venues on the Idaho campus that can host large events, according to Joe Nickell, associate athletic director, no other facility will be implementing the policy for the foreseeable future.
“The plan would be to extend this policy to other venues on campus in the future, but the only facility scheduled to go into effect for this next year is Albertsons Stadium,” he wrote in an email.
Many other football programs have implemented clear bag policies in recent years, including the University of Nebraska, the University of Utah, Iowa State University, Oklahoma University, Baylor University, and all schools in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
