Bethune-Cookman U. Seeks Its Own Police Force

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
Published: February 10, 2010

Officials at Bethune-Cookman University are close to bringing a police force on campus.

The private university, which is surrounded by a high-crime neighborhood, has been looking into replacing its private security company for sworn police officers for at least four months after a Sept. 29, 2009 riot inside the university’s Bronson Hall.

According to the Daytona Beach New-Journal, the university has hired former Titusville police supervisor, Mel Williams, as chief of security. Williams formerly worked for the Orlando Police Department and is currently looking for an arrangement with the Daytona Beach Police Department to hire sworn police officers.

Florida requires that private universities hire officers sworn to the local jurisdiction.
