BOULDER, Colo. — A 21-year-old man, believed to be suicidal and armed with a handgun, surrendered to police at 7 p.m. on Monday, ending a long standoff outside of Boulder Community Hospital. The man has been taken into custody and is being held at Boulder County Jail.
According to hospital spokesman Rich Sheehan, a doctor reported seeing a distraught man outside the facility to hospital security around 3:15 p.m., the Daily Camera reports. Hospital employees said the man put a gun and his mouth and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not go off.
Around the same time, a female friend of the man contacted police to report that he was possibly suicide and armed.
No one was injured in the incident, and it is unclear whether the gun was loaded. The man, who was hiding the gun under a jacket draped over his midsection, could face charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon.
Only the hospital’s kitchen was evacuated during the incident. Ambulances were diverted to other hospitals, but the emergency room continued to accept walk-in patients.
