HOUSTON — North Forest High School officials have decided to purchase a transparent backpack for each of the school’s 1,285 students as a safety measure. The plan comes after a shooting on Jan. 10 that left one student injured.
Warren Lewis, a senior, shot a 16-year-old boy in the leg in a school hallway, the Houston Chronicle reports. Lewis was subdued by a teacher who is also a deputy constable.
The school is equipped with metal detectors, but they are only monitored at the beginning of the school day. Students can avoid them by coming through a side door or showing up late.
