DUNCAN, S.C. — During Byrnes High School graduation, police issued tickets to 14 people for cheering loudly when graduates’ names were called.
Each person ticketed must pay a $262 fine for public disorderly conduct, the Associated Press reports. Duncan Police Chief Ryan Cothran said students had been warned beforehand that outbursts would not be tolerated.
Cothran said the no-cheering policy has been in place for years, but this was the largest number of tickets issued at once.
