26 Fires Prompt Des Moines Schools to Install Cameras

Published: May 3, 2011

DES MOINES, Iowa — Officials from Des Moines Public Schools hope to eliminate the occurrence of small fires on campuses by installing security cameras. In the past two years, firefighters have been called to schools in the district 26 times.

About 40 cameras are being installed at Roosevelt High School as part of a renovation, the Des Moines Register reports. Principal Kathie Danielson said the cameras have already caught the theft of an iPod on video.

This year, the fire department has responded to 14 fires at schools. The fires have started at elementary, middle and high schools. North High School has been evacuated five times this school year due to fires; the most recent was in a restroom trash can.

As part of North High’s renovation, cameras will be installed inside and outside the building, in hallways, common areas and even out-of-the-way locations.
