Working Through Problems Unique to Hospitals
We saved the vaguest slide for last. There are some situations hospital security officers find themselves in that traditional or school police officers rarely have to deal with.
While school police are familiar with lockdown and evacuation procedures, dealing with immobile, contagious, restrained or irrational subjects and patients adds new challenges.
There are also concerns at hospitals that schools simply don’t have to worry about, like infant abductions and monitoring patients on suicide watch. Handling aggressive patients in emergency rooms is an especially sensitive situation because of overcrowding and the increased vulnerability of nearby patients. Hospital security officers also deal with gang and domestic violence that spills into hospitals after incidents that take place outside of the institution.
The significant presence of drugs, cash and confidential records poses further challenges.
