Handling Criminal Patients
In some states, hospital security officers are responsible for, or at least assist in, handling forensic patients (patients that are in custody of law enforcement or under legal restrictions). Ensuring the prisoner doesn’t harm himself or others requires constant supervision and adherence to strict procedures that vary by hospital.
Campus Safety has reported on numerous prisoner escapes that in some cases resulted from a failure to follow protocol. There have also been multiple officer-involved shootings in hospitals following imminent threats and attempted escapes.
Hospital security officers must familiarize themselves with their institution’s procedures for handling forensic patients and be comfortable working in conjunction with local police.
