Spotlight on Higher Education/Healthcare Campus Safety Director of the Year Finalist Thomas Leone

Congratulations to Thomas Leone, Assistant Vice President of Public Safety/Chief of Police at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, for being named one of this year’s higher education and healthcare Campus Safety Director of the Year finalists.

Some of his notable achievements include:

  • Developed a diversity, equity, and inclusion task force and required all UMBPD employees to be trained in de-escalation, ethics, pro-LGBTQ+ policing, implicit bias, and more.
  • Transitioned the campus 911 system so that police communications operators are automatically notified about 911 calls on campus.
  • Hired two social work interns and a licensed clinical social worker to provide case management help in his department.
