Investigation: Occidental College Underreported Sex Assaults

LOS ANGELES—An investigation by the Los Angeles Times indicates that Occidental College’s underreporting of sexual assault claims was more extensive than the school previously acknowledged.

Although the campus admitted it failed to report 24 allegations made by students in 2010 and 2011, the Times found 27 more sexual assault claims made by students in 2012 that weren’t disclosed. Additionally, dozens of anonymous allegations of sexual assault made since 2009 may have been ignored by campus officials. In other cases, administrators discouraged victims from filing reports.

The newspaper based its report on documents, interviews and a review of two confidential federal complaints against the school.
