PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Youth United for Change (YUC) is challenging the School District of Philadelphia’s zero-tolerance policy, claiming that it puts educational opportunities for many students at risk by doling out overly harsh punishments.
According to a report released by YUC in January, the district’s arrest rate was up to 25 times higher than that of other large districts in the state. In one example, a sophomore was arrested, suspended and transferred to a disciplinary institution after he accidentally brought a pair of scissors to school, Fox News reports.
The district issued a statement in response to the report, stating that all students are afforded due process and that some of the statistics in the report are incorrect.
