ASHLAND, Ohio — In a remarkable display of quick thinking and bravery, three students in Ashland, Ohio, are being celebrated for their heroic efforts in aiding a school bus driver during a medical emergency.
The incident unfolded on the morning of December 19, when Michelle Cheadle, a bus driver for Crestview Local Schools, encountered a breathing-related medical issue.
Quick Action by Students on School Bus
Video footage shared by the school district showcases the swift response of Charlie Thomas, 14, and his sister Catrina Thomas, 8, as they rushed to Cheadle’s aid.

Catrina, a third-grader, was the first to notice Cheadle’s distress, reports the Mansfield News Journal. She immediately asked if the driver was okay, receiving a silent shake of the head in response.
Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, Catrina quickly ran to the back of the bus to alert older students and provided critical location details to the district staff.
Kali Meeks, an eighth-grade student, went to the front of the bus and attempted to use the bus radio to call for help, reports News5Cleveland. When the radio attempt was unsuccessful, Kali calmly directed students to move to the back of the bus and called 911.
Charlie, a seventh grader, successfully managed to use the bus radio, communicating essential information to the district’s transportation director, ensuring a prompt response from the district staff.
District’s Immediate Response
The district mobilized quickly, with Superintendent Jim Grubbs being the first to arrive at the scene, followed by Transportation Director Joni Robson, Maintenance Supervisor Gene Esbenshade, Elementary Custodian Scott Amburgey, and backup Bus Driver Mike Welch.

Gene and Scott assisted in helping Cheadle safely off the bus, while Mike took over the driving duties to complete the route.
Thanks to the students’ quick actions, the bus arrived on campus only minutes later than usual, with parents promptly informed of their children’s safety.
Michelle Cheadle was transported to a local hospital for further testing. The incident highlights the importance of readiness and the extraordinary courage displayed by young individuals in emergencies.
