York U. Investigates 5 Sexual Assaults

Published: July 10, 2012

TORONTO — A total of five women have come forward claiming they were sexually assaulted at York University. Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the crimes.

The first three victims to come forward said they were assaulted on July 5 and 6 in and around campus by a man who attempted to have a conversation with them before attacking them, The Globe and Mail reports. Police arrested a man named Oshane Leach on Monday.

An E-mail warning students of the assaults did not go out until four days after the initial attack, Can-India reports. The school’s student federation said that they hoped administrators would inform students earlier to avoid potential safety issues.

There have been 43 sexual assaults at the university between the 2005-2006 and 2009-2010 school years, The Star reports. The news source claims the university has a reputation for its “culture of silence” around sexual assaults on campus, and three years ago, students pressured the administration to conduct a sexual safety audit.
