An old bomb that was discovered on the campus of a New Jersey college was detonated by the military recently.

The World War II-era bomb was discovered on April 23 during excavation work for a new building at Middlesex County College. The size of the bomb, which weighed roughly 500 pounds, caused officials to evacuate construction workers, but other campus buildings were far enough away to avoid evacuation.

The bomb is believed to have been left over from a Raritan Arsenal that was formerly on the grounds. It was taken to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst near Trenton, New Jersey, according to nydailynews.com.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Adam Usher, who says unexploded ordinance discoveries are relatively common, says he’s never detonated such a large bomb.
