School districts in north central Wisconsin are planning to require classroom volunteers to undergo criminal background screenings.
The policy, which requires parents and others to submit personal information such as contact information, Social Security numbers and whether they have been convicted of a felony, was implemented in 2009 by the Wausau School Board, reports the Wausau Daily Herald. D.C. Everest Area School District and the Merrill School Board plan to follow suit.
Those required to undergo a criminal background check include mentor tutors, anyone who has one-on-one contact with a student or is a frequent volunteer. Guest speakers or people working a non-education activity do not need a background check; however, that person must remain in the view of a school employee.
Background checks are valid for four years.
