HAMLIN, W.V. – On June 25, the State School Building Authority (SBA) approved the governor’s School Access Safety Act with a few minor modifications at a meeting in Lincoln County High School.
Governor Joe Manchin introduced the act to improve security at elementary and secondary schools. The Legislature passed it into law earlier this year. Legislators have asked the state to set aside $10 million for schools to renovate doors and windows, install alarms, and make other upgrades to security. They also called for local school system officials to contribute at least 15 percent of what the state gives to the county.
During the meeting, the SBA set audit deadlines to assess school safety and accelerate the process by which counties receive state money. Governor Manchin asked the SBA to include provisions to lessen harassment and bullying in the act as well.
The SBA also approved funding in several other areas, including $5.6 million for bond projects in nine counties and $3 million for the new Oak Hill School.
