CHARLESTON, W. Va. — To prevent tragedies like the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, West Virginia’s School Building Authority has approved new school building standards across the state’s 55 counties.
As part of the new measures, all schools will install windows constructed with shatterproof glass. Additionally, school officials will place concrete barriers on the outside of a school building to prevent anyone from driving through the front of the school, WSAZ.com reports.
The building authority also requires that all administrative offices and front desks to have direct lines of sight to school parking lots. In addition, all doors that are not used for general entry will be equipped with an alarm. Schools must also install keyless entry and lockdown buttons.
