CHARLESTON, W. Va. — During the two-day KidStrong Conference, arranged by the West Virginia Department of Education, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin urged state schools to practice responding to a gunman’s attack.
Other recommendations offered by Goodwin included installing shatter-resistant windows, classroom doors that lock quickly and implementing anti-bullying programs, The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reports.
The recommendations stem from a report drawn from a school safety summit held in February. The report included a 10-item critical list that suggested that each school deploy a single and lock entry point, an emergency alarm system for the entire campus community and first responders, as well as a system for informing parents and other schools speedily.
The report also called for the Prevention Resource Officer Corps to provide active and retired law enforcement, as well as veterans, to monitor schools. Another recommendation included starting a statewide program for identifying and reaching out to potentially violent students.
