The VTV Family Outreach Foundation (VTV) on Friday called on the Obama Administration to use existing funds to create a National Center for Campus Public Safety.
In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder , Joe Samaha , president of VTV and the father of Reema Samaha who was killed in the April 16, 2007 shooting tragedy at Virginia Tech, praised the administration’s one time initiative to bolster emergency response plans at colleges and universities, and added that “the establishment of a permanent National Center for Campus Public Safety that will provide ongoing support to improve campus safety is also an essential part of the solution to the tragic violence that plagues our nation’s campuses.”
Virginia Congressman Frank Wolf added his support to the effort earlier this week in a letter to the Attorney General asking for the establishment of the Center. “Such a program could provide training, research and best practices to educational institutions at all levels to increase safety and prevent violence,” he wrote.
Wolf, a Republican, is an original bi-partisan co-sponsor of the Center to Advance, Monitor, and Preserve University Security Safety Act or CAMPUS Safety Act (H.R. 359) sponsored by fellow Virginia Congressman Bobby Scott , a Democrat. VTV has been working with Congress for over a year to support this initiative.
