Va. Military Institute Admits It Didn’t Follow Sex Assault Investigation Protocol
The U.S. Department of Education is investigating a claim made nearly three years ago by a former female cadet that she was assaulted. It is also investigating the Virginia Military Institute’s (VMI) treatment of women.
VMI officials have admitted they didn’t follow protocol when they investigated the cadet’s claim that she was sexually assaulted while at the house of a senior VMI staff member, reports Roanoke.com. Instead of reporting the allegations to the school’s inspector general, a high ranking officer confronted the suspect directly. Eight months later, VMI’s inspector general learned of the incident and began an investigation. The man accused of the assault left VMI after the conclusion of the inquiry.
In May, the Department of Education Office of Civil Rights began investigating possible Title IX violations by the school.
